Maldivian has officially launched its new direct service between Malé and Melbourne, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s international network expansion strategy while strengthening aviation, tourism, trade, and cargo connectivity between the Maldives and Australia.

The inaugural flight, operated as Q2 956, departed from Velana International Airport on 17 May 2026 at 22:34 and arrived at Melbourne Airport at 14:10 local time.

The return service, operating as Q2 957, departed Melbourne on 18 May 2026 at 23:37 and arrived in Malé at 06:04 local time.

Airbus A330-200 Operating the Melbourne–Malé Route

The new nonstop Australia–Maldives route is operated using Maldivian’s Airbus A330-200, configured in a three-class layout featuring 18 Business Class seats, 36 Premium Economy seats and 210 Economy Class seats.

The widebody aircraft offers enhanced passenger comfort and long-haul travel convenience, supporting the airline’s strategy to expand into key international tourism and trade markets.

The weekly Melbourne–Malé service is operated in partnership with Australian luxury travel platform Luxury Escapes, further strengthening inbound tourism demand from Australia to the Maldives.

Strong Passenger Demand and Air Cargo Capacity

The inaugural Melbourne–Malé service recorded a strong passenger load factor, carrying 234 passengers on the first flight.

In addition to passenger operations, the route provides significant opportunities for air cargo and trade logistics, with an estimated cargo uplift capacity of 15 to 20 tons each way. The new service is expected to facilitate the movement of high-value perishables, tourism supplies, seafood exports, e-commerce shipments, and time-sensitive cargo between Australia and the Maldives.

Industry observers note that the direct route opens new opportunities for aviation logistics, freight forwarding, and bilateral trade growth between the two countries.

Reduced Travel Time Between Australia and Maldives

The direct Melbourne–Malé route provides travelers with the first-ever nonstop air connection between Australia and the Maldives, significantly reducing travel times previously routed through Southeast Asia or the Middle East.

The new service cuts traditional journey durations of approximately 20 hours to under 11 hours, offering Australian travelers the fastest and most convenient access to the Maldives.

The flight schedule has been specifically designed to maximize convenience for leisure travelers and premium holiday passengers.

Passengers departing Melbourne at 23:20 arrive in the Maldives at 05:55 the following morning, enabling travelers to rest overnight onboard and arrive just ahead of resort check-in times, maximizing the first full day of their holiday experience.

Similarly, the 20:40 departure from Malé allows tourists to fully utilize the final day of their Maldives holiday before departing for Australia, with arrival into Melbourne scheduled at 12:30 local time.

The aircraft will remain on the ground in Melbourne for approximately 11 hours before operating the return service.

Designed primarily for the Australian winter and spring travel market, the seasonal service operates weekly departing MLE on every Sunday and departing from MEL on every Monday. The seasonal operation is scheduled to continue through November 2026.

Growing Australian Tourism Market for the Maldives

Australia continues to emerge as one of the fastest-growing long-haul tourism source markets for the Maldives.

Australian tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased from 39,928 visitors in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, to 42,703 visitors in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and highlighting the growing importance of the Australian outbound travel market for the Maldives tourism industry.

The launch of the direct Melbourne service is expected to further stimulate visitor growth, luxury travel demand, honeymoon tourism, and premium leisure travel to the Maldives.

New Bilateral Air Services Agreement Supports Route Launch

The launch of the MLE–MEL route follows the newly signed bilateral air services agreement between the Maldives and Australia, allowing designated airlines from both countries to operate international passenger and cargo services to all international airports in both nations.

The agreement is expected to further enhance aviation cooperation, tourism development, cargo operations, and future route expansion opportunities.

Inaugural Celebrations in Melbourne and Malé

The inaugural arrival in both Melbourne and Malé was celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing the official welcome of the new international service.

Special ribbon-cutting ceremonies were also held at both airports to commemorate the historic launch, attended by senior airline executives, airport authorities, tourism officials, and invited guests.

The launch attracted strong media attention from regional and international aviation, tourism, and business media outlets. Passenger engagement activities and promotional events were organized during check-in and boarding for the inaugural flights.

VIP guests attending the launch ceremony included representatives from Melbourne Airport, Maldives Airports Company Limited, Visit Maldives, Maldivian, Government representatives from the Maldives and Australia, Aviation, tourism, and logistics industry stakeholders.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, airline officials described the Melbourne route as a major achievement for Maldivian and a strategic step in expanding the airline’s international footprint.

“This route reflects our commitment to connecting the Maldives with important global markets while enhancing travel opportunities for both leisure and business passengers,” the airline stated.

The new direct Australia–Maldives air link is expected to significantly improve travel accessibility for Australian visitors while supporting broader economic cooperation in tourism, education, trade, cargo logistics, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
