MALÉ, Maldives — French low-cost long-haul carrier French bee is set to launch flights to the Maldives later this year, marking the airline’s entry into one of the Indian Ocean’s most popular leisure destinations and strengthening air connectivity between France and the Maldives.

The airline has opened sales for a new seasonal service linking Paris-Orly, Malé and Colombo, with operations scheduled to commence on 19 December 2026 and continue until 2 May 2027.

French bee Maldives Flights to Operate Twice Weekly

French bee’s new service will operate on a Paris-Orly–Malé–Colombo–Paris-Orly routing, providing French travellers with direct access to the Maldives while also serving demand to neighbouring Sri Lanka.

The route is scheduled to operate twice weekly during the peak winter season, offering additional capacity between France and the Maldives at a time when demand from the French market continues to recover. The service will be one of the few direct air links connecting the two countries and is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ appeal among French holidaymakers seeking winter sun destinations.

Airbus A350-900 to Serve Paris–Maldives Route

The airline will deploy its Airbus A350-900 aircraft on the route. Configured in a high-density two-class layout, the aircraft features 35 Premium Class seats and 376 Economy Class seats, providing a total capacity of 411 passengers.

The Airbus A350-900 is among the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft currently in service and forms the backbone of French bee’s long-haul network. Its deployment on the Maldives route reflects the airline’s strategy of targeting high-demand leisure markets with lower-cost operating economics.

France–Maldives Air Service Agreement Limits Growth

The launch of French bee’s Maldives service comes as available air traffic rights between France and the Maldives approach their current limits.

According to information published by the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, the existing air service agreement between the two countries permits only two weekly frequencies and grants third and fourth freedom traffic rights. Under these provisions, airlines are allowed to transport passengers directly between France and the Maldives but are not entitled to exercise broader commercial traffic rights beyond the bilateral framework.

The allocation of the available frequencies to French bee effectively utilizes the capacity currently available under the agreement. Any future growth in scheduled air services between the two countries would likely require an expansion of the bilateral arrangement or the negotiation of additional traffic rights.

Could French bee Impact Future Air France Maldives Operations?

The entry of French bee into the Maldives market could also influence future opportunities for other French carriers.

Air France has previously operated services to the Maldives and has periodically evaluated seasonal leisure routes during the winter travel season. However, with the current bilateral agreement limiting operations to two weekly frequencies, the allocation of those rights to French bee could restrict opportunities for additional French airline services unless the agreement is revised.

While Air France has not announced plans to resume Maldives operations, industry observers note that future expansion by French carriers may depend on the availability of additional traffic rights between the two countries.

French Tourist Arrivals to Maldives Near Pre-Pandemic Levels

France continues to rank among the Maldives’ most important tourism source markets in Western Europe.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maldives welcomed 59,738 French visitors in 2019. Visitor arrivals from France reached 54,078 in 2025, representing a recovery to more than 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

The continued strength of the French market has supported the case for additional direct air connectivity, particularly during the winter season when demand for long-haul leisure travel traditionally peaks. The introduction of French bee’s service is expected to provide travellers with a new non-stop option while supporting further growth in visitor arrivals from France.

Tickets Now on Sale for Winter 2026–2027 Travel

French bee has already opened reservations for the new route, allowing travellers to book flights for the 2026–2027 winter season.

The inaugural service is scheduled to depart on 19 December 2026, with operations continuing until 2 May 2027. The launch aligns with the Maldives’ peak tourism period and is expected to enhance the destination’s accessibility for travellers from France.

With direct flights, competitive fares and a high-capacity Airbus A350-900 operation, French bee’s arrival marks a significant development for Maldives tourism and further strengthens the country’s growing connectivity with key European source markets.

Boost for the Maldives Tourism Industry

The launch of French bee’s Maldives service is expected to provide a welcome boost to the country’s tourism industry by improving direct access from France, one of the Maldives’ key European source markets. The availability of non-stop flights from Paris could make the destination more attractive to French travellers by reducing travel time and reliance on connecting flights through Middle Eastern hubs, while also increasing the Maldives’ visibility in the French leisure travel market.

The new service is also expected to support tourism businesses across the sector, from resorts and guesthouses to excursion operators and transport providers. As French visitors are generally regarded as a high-value market segment, the additional air connectivity could help drive visitor growth, strengthen tourism revenues and enhance the Maldives’ competitiveness against other Indian Ocean destinations seeking to attract European travellers.
